The department of home affairs compiled names of babies born during the Coronavirus pandemic in both public and private health care facilities in the country.
What’s interesting is that there is a lot of babies that have Coronavirus related name. In fact, out of the 62 000 babies born in the past four weeks, 15307 babies have Coronavirus related names ranging from Coro to Virus.
Believe it or not, there is also a new addition Hantavirus. Hantavirus which killed a man in China a few days ago also made it to the baby names. A baby called Hantavi Khumalo was born in Gauteng on Tuesday 25 March.
The most popular Coronavirus related baby names are. Covid, Covi, Covy, Corona, Coro, Rona Coronavi, Coronavirus, Pandemic, Demic, and Virus are some of the most popular names. Some parents went as far as giving their babies first and the middle names that are related to the pandemic. Corona Pandemic Covid Maswanganyi is one example. The boy was born in Limpopo, Malamulele Hospital near Thohoyandou.
The department spokesperson said this is not unusual among South African parents. “Parents love to name their children after things that are happening near or during the child’s birth it a cultural thing. We had many babies named Election during the 2019 elections, we have Loadshedding Khuzwayo and believe it or not there is Zondo Commission Mashela”
