In this post, Tontrends shall profile National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who committed suicide from June 2019 till date.
One may wonder why talented young graduates are committing suicide. Did they kill themselves because of the poor allowance (N19,000) the Federal Government pay them? What kind of depression could make a Corps member consider taking his/her own life?
Well, in this article, we will get to the root.
List of NYSC members who committed Suicide and their reasons
1. Ezekiel Mayowa
A student at the Department of Hospitality Management Technology, Lagos State Polytechnic, Ezekiel Mayowa, has killed himself after he was reportedly dumped by his girlfriend, who is currently a Nigerian Corper.
The corpse of the 34-year-old part-time student was discovered in his residence at Eyita, Ikorodu, around 5am on Friday. He was said to have taken a poisonous substance suspected to be Sniper.
Moments before he committed suicide, Mayowa posted a video on Facebook, explaining why he took the decision.
In the three-minute-18-second video, Mayowa bemoaned how his lover, one Bolaji Temmy, whom he had dated for nine years, ended the relationship after she commenced her National Youth Service Corps programme.
Amid sobs, Mayowa, who identified himself as the president of his department’s students’ association, lamented that he had made several efforts to reconcile with his estranged lover, but to no avail.
He said in the video, “I will advise the Federal Government to scrap NYSC because that is where I lost my joy; my love. I am not a bad boy; I am not wicked. Since my woman got into that (NYSC) camp, everything changed. Since last year, we’ve not been able to resolve anything. My woman is now taking an advantage of the mistake I made three years ago to leave me.
“I am going, I need to go, Bolaji Temmy is the woman I’m talking about. I need to go. To all the boys out there, please try to make money before you date any woman. I’ve tried my best. I’ve tried all I could. We’ve been dating for nine years and now she is leaving. I hurt her in the past, but I’ve appealed to her. But she insisted on leaving me.”
He appealed to his mother and colleagues to take heart, noting that he had chosen his own path.
I will miss my mum. Mummy, please don’t cry. I have chosen my own path…I will miss you all. Your president is going… I am going. I am going now. I am empty. Bye,” he concluded.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, said the Shagamu Road Police Station, Ikorodu, received a distress call on the suicide around 5.30am.
He said when interrogated by the police, the girlfriend said Mayowa was fond of beating her and that they were together shortly before he took the poison.
Elkana said, “The police received information that a 34-year-old part-time student at Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, drank a poisonous chemical identified as Sniper, following a misunderstanding between him and his girlfriend, Olokodana Bolaji, 24, who was also a graduate of the same institution.
“He was rushed to hospital by his neighbors following an alarm raised by his girlfriend, but eventually died. In the statement of his girlfriend, she told police investigators that she and the deceased dated for nine years and that the deceased was fond of beating her.
“She said while she was with the deceased in his room, they had a quarrel and he, as usual, resorted to physical violence. She said she ran to the restroom and upon her return, she found him gasping for breath with an empty bottle of Sniper beside him.”
The PPRO stated that detectives from the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, visited the scene of the incident, adding that the corpse had been deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
“Investigation is ongoing to determine whether it was actually a suicide case or murder,” Elkana added.

Thank God I was able to encourage myself.”

The Public Relations Officer of NYSC in the state, Mrs Christy Olatoye, confirmed the incident, praying that “God protects our youths from the rampant cases of suicide.”

He was said to have been posted to Oyo State with the code number OY/18B/2337. JOS/2018/055264.
3. Mercy Adelakun
Recall that we at nyscinfo.com had previously reported that ex-corper, Mercy Adelakun committed suicide because her boy friend dumped her. Mercy’s decision to take her own life has got many people talking why the young lady should go to that extreme. Many blamed her boyfriend, but today Mercy’s boyfriend has cleared the air.
Mercy Adelakun’s boyfriend (name withheld) has given our agency the full story why his lover, Mercy took her life.
According to Mercy’s boyfriend, Mercy attempted suicide up to three times before they met each other in 2017. “I really love her(Mercy) despite the fact she was ‘epileptic’. We both planned to get married but her parents never allowed that to happen because they said I’m a curse.”
“Mercy’s parents attend ‘white garment church’, and they always see visions that I am a curse to their family…”
Below is the full account why Mercy killed herself, according to Mercy’s boyfriend:
“I met Mercy Adelakun when we went for a Facebook hangout in December, 2017. I asked her to date me but she didn’t want to give in then due to some reasons. I persisted before she later opened up to me that she’s suffering from epilepsy and the past relationship she’s been into didn’t end well.
“I told her she shouldn’t worry that I would always be there for her… So, we started dating.
“Problem started when she told me that her grandmother who was a prophetess saw some visions that we couldn’t get married because I’m not good for her; that we are not compatible for marriage. I then told her it was all lies that nobody has the power to see our future.
“But she (Mercy) never listened to me. So, a day(Sat 29th June, 2019) before she committed suicide, she texted me that she was depressed that she felt like dying. When I asked her what the issue was, she said they(Mercy’s parents) had another visions; this time, she said the vision was that her(Mercy’s) life is in danger if she continued in relationship with me. Then I told her that this is getting serious, that I have been telling her time without number that these things are all lies and if she believed those visions; then for me not to put her life at risk that maybe we should go our separate ways.
“That’s our last discussion on that Saturday. So, on Sunday morning, she sent a text to me that she is coming to pick her money and other things she left in my place… next, I got another text from her saying she’s gone.
“I immediately called her on phone and she picked up but Jeremy’s voice was weak, telling me its too late. I had to quickly call her younger brother to go check on her… The next thing I would hear was that she’s dead”
4. Bolufemi Princess Motunrayo
A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Miss Bolufemi Princess Motunrayo has ended her own life.

Bolufemi committed suicide on 10th of January, 2020 by drinking two bottles of insecticide (snippers).
In a short note she pen down before committing suicide, she said,

Mummy I love you
Daddy I love you
Matthew and John, you guy should take care,
We will meet where we will depart no more.
I love you guys.”
See her last words to family members
I think a lot of sensitization still need to be done on suicide. People need to know that the person who commits suicide, dies once but those left behind die a thousand deaths, trying to relive those terrible and understand. why?
Suicide doesn’t end the chances of life getting worse, it eliminates the possibility of it ever getting any better.
Please, no one should commit suicide because it is never a solution. What will you tell God in judgment throne?
Looking at the high rate of corps members suicide, as a Nigerian, what are your thoughts on this?
