Police in Plateau say they have arrested a woman,
Leritshimwa Diyal, over a three-day-old baby that was stolen from Plateau State
Specialists Hospital in Jos, the state capital.
The child’s mother, Mary Chukwuebuka, had said that the
suspect disguised as a hospital worker and claimed to be acting on a doctor’s
instruction to bring the infant.
Plateau police spokesman, Tyopev Terna, in a statement on Friday said that the suspect claimed to have given birth at a kidnappers’ camp the same day a baby was stolen at the Plateau hospital.
Mr Terna said the police had written to Jos University
Teaching Hospital (JUTH) where Leritshimwa claimed she attended ante-natal care.
“While investigation was ongoing, the police got an
intelligence that a woman by name Leritshimwa Diyal of Zawan in Jos South LGA
who claimed to have given birth on the same while in the kidnappers camp
brought a female child to Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Jos for medical
“The Police immediately wrote to the hospital on
03/05/19 for the hospital to examine her as to whether she gave birth naturally
within the period she so claimed.
“The Police also wrote to Jos University Teaching
Hospital (JUTH) on 03/06/19 where she claimed she attended ante-natal care so
as to confirm her claim or otherwise,” the statement said.
Terna said the police are awaiting reply from JUTH to continue investigations.
